My kids would use a straw at every meal if I allowed it.While disposable straws are not a big expense, they are incredibly wasteful. We tried Glass Dharma straws in February and fell in love with them. These beautiful straws proved fun and practical to use with hot and cold drinks. I soon discovered why I love glass straws for kids. Glass Dharma straws are:
- Environmentally responsible.
- Dishwasher safe and easy to clean.
- Made in the USA.
- Backed by a lifetime guarantee.
- Durable.
- Affordable.
Imagine my delight when Glass Dharma agreed to sponsor my 11,000 Likes Giveaway Celebration and have my family review a selection of shorty straws! This means that each one of my kids has their own perfectly sized straw to grab anytime they want.
It also means that I can keep the adult sized glass straws for myself, without anyone accidentally tipping kids sized glasses over with them or testing them to see if they are really “unbreakable.” (Surprise! They are not. They can handle falling to the ground, but not “testing” them roughly against counter tops.)
My kids are becoming more environmentally aware and I love introducing them to new ways to reuse and recycle. We made birthday party decorations this morning and my son asked, “You’re going to recycle those scraps, right?” Cloth diapers open the door to great discussions about waste and it’s fun to make recycle bin craft projects. We have reusable sandwich bags, grocery bags, diapers, and baby food pouches. Reusing glass straws is the next logical step.
Beyond the practicality of glass straws, they simply improve the drinking experience. It’s comparable to having a tall glass of water in a glass vs a plastic cup or sipping a cool drink from a glass bottle versus aluminum. Glass Dharma straws are a definite upgrade from disposable straws and we prefer them over plastic solutions.
My kids had a chance to test the three versions of Glass Dharma shorty straws. These shorts straws are similar in height, but vary in diameter, from 2.5 mm to 7.6 mm. Kids will most likely find the sipper most like a traditional disposable straw, but appreciate the height difference. The larger diameter comes in handy, though, when kids are enjoying smoothies or milkshakes.
The shorty straws were also light enough not to tip over child sized cups and sturdy enough to withstand handling by my 4 year-0ld. Don’t let the glass fool you – these straws can handle being dropped and dumped in the dishwasher by less than gentle hands. Plus, they’re protected by a lifetime guarantee, just in case one becomes a dinner time casualty.

We’ve not tried glass drinking straws yet but might have to make the switch soon. I don’t like the waste involved with plastic straws. Thank you for this post.

Yes!! So much better for the environment! Plus my son had a straw chewing habit and they would totally hopefully help break him of it 😉
