If I created a newborn cloth diaper, it would look like the Tush Mate. High praise, I know, but here’s a quick overview of why:
- True newborn fit. 5 to 14 lbs.
- Super sticky aplix tabs. Amazing stickiness with scratchiness!
- Absorbency without bulk. Comes with an attached insert.
- Elastic adjustable back and side elasticized liner.
- Affordable. This diaper makes a budget worthy newborn stash.
Crafting a true newborn cloth diaper that fits from birth, then lasts more than a few weeks is definitely a challenge. I found that many of my favorite truly tiny newborn cloth diapers maxed out on fit or absorbency within a month. Granted, I did have a larger baby at nearly 9 lbs, but his slender build required a newborn fit.
Paying $20 plus per diaper for a stash of diapers to fit for one month, then still needing a size small before transitioning to one-size diapers does not seem practical. With TushMate, this wasn’t an issue. The TushMate fit at birth and continues to fit at 12 weeks. The included microfiber booster helps address his increased absorbency needs and I could slip an extra insert in now that he is bigger. With 2 inserts at just under $10 (and compatible with the TushMate One-Fits-All Diaper), this is a practical and affordable way to increase absorbency.
I decided to feature the TushMate Newborn Cloth Diaper in a video review. Stay tuned for 2 more videos that compare newborn cloth diapers and one-sized diapers on their smallest settings.

Wow! This really is a super affordable system!!
I’m a big fan of the open design- it would definitely cut down on dry time!
Thanks for the review! Want to try them now!
I like that there’s a stay-dry layer, but natural fibers underneath. Very unique!
I had never heard of this diaper before, but I would love to try it. I like that it is supposed to fit from birth. I, too, had a larger but slender baby. Thanks for the review!
These seem like nice slim diapers; perfect for a newborn. What are the fabrics they use? It just says stay-dry for the top layer and natural for the bottom. Is it microfiber and cotton? or hemp?
Hi Theresa! It’s a hemp/organic cotton inserts, with an included stay dry liner.
I have a one Tushmate diaper, but would love to get some newborn for my next LO
An AIO must be fairly quick to dry or it isn’t worth it to me. This looks like it would fit the bill! Even better that you can add absorbency easily. And awesome on the hemp – I just hate having to prep natural fibers lol.
Now to keep this in mind when considering newborn cloth diapering options with our next. One-size didn’t work until almost 3 months and while I like flats/prefolds and have smaller covers already, sometimes you just “need” the convenience of a disposable look-alike (aka AIO/pocket).
I love the open design. No trying to stuff the tiny diapers! 🙂
I really like the fit and overall design of these!
I love so many things about this newborn diaper and have chosen it for our newborn stash. Would love to win one! I like the hook and loop, stay-dry liner, all-in-one design, natural fibers (cotton/hemp is my fav) and rise snaps to last longer.
I like the natural insert, because oftentimes newborn diapers get re-sold, it’s great to know that you won’t end up with a microfiber stinky diaper to pass along (or receive) if someone has hard water or a bad wash routine! The natural fibers are so much more forgiving than microfiber!
Wow, the sizing of these diapers they would still practically fit my twins at 6 months!
I love how affordable these are.
I like that the insert is attached & that the extra elastic makes leg gussets on the inside of the diaper. I like my flats & covers, but I think I would like the TushMate for a newborn.
Very cute! I love the ideas of AIO/AI2s! They’re so convenient and easy. It looks like the semi-attached liner would help the diaper dry faster than a traditional AIO too.
Wow, I love that these actually fit from birth and last a while! This is going on my list for our stash as we build it before baby. Thanks so much! This is a good price.
These look pretty neat. I like that you can add additional inserts for greater absorbancy as the baby grows.
A fast drying AIO is a must. I love tushmate’s globe print!
I love the globe print, too!
Did this rub the cord stump?
I didn’t have an issue with this on our son. Seemed to fit comfortably.
I love that it’s so absorbent without being bulky! Have to keep this one in mind!
Thanks for the review! I’m looking forward to using cloth diapers but haven’t decided if we will do newborn ones. Now I know of a great option if we choose to start early!
I had given up on the idea of a newborn AIO since I didn’t think one could get clean in our coin-operated, HE washers. But this comes apart so well, and combines the best of stay-dry/natural inserts without being bulky. It could be a godsend for days out!
I love that the inserts attach. One of my favorite features. It won’t move around and get pushed in the wrong direction
I generally don’t like Aplix, but I just read a little more about TushMate’s hook & loop and I”d love to try it! It really is so much easier to get a good fit on tiny babies compared with snaps, but I hated how they would lose their stickiness and be scratchy. Looks like TushMate has solved that. 🙂
Been looking for a reasonable option for my small babe. I’ll try it!
I appreciate your explanation re: aplix. Even though I have cloth diapered several newborns, currently on my 5th, I now understand the benefit of it! I also like the easy wash/dry of the inserts. Great feature!
I think the size range is awesome! Plus I love how you can custom absorbancy so easily!
I feel like newborn diapering for the first time is almost like starting over with cloth diapering in general! I wonder about a lot of newborn fits so thanks for the info!
I wish I knew this before I had my son lol
How great that it fits so long! The aplix and non-bulkiness soun really great too!
I appreciate the video! Next best thing to seeing one in person 🙂 I’d still love to try one though!
This seems like a really adjustable diaper. Perfect for little ones who change seemingly day to day!
One of the reasons I didn’t buy newborn diapers for my baby was because I didn’t want to buy diapers and only use them for a few weeks, so I love the wide range of size options the TushMate Newborn offers. Great price, too! Thanks for the video! It’s always better to see it! Thanks!
Love the fact that they can be used longer than most newborn diapers! Definitely worth it!
First time I’ve heard of this brand and I love that they’re affordable !!! Will look into them more. Thanks very much!
Love the size range and fast dry time.
Those look super comfy! My SIL is having a little boy in July, so I’ll let her know about how good this diaper fits on newborns!
Love that they are so affordable! And I love the earth print!!
At this price, I need to have another little so I can try them lol!
Hoping to try newborn diapers with our next little one. I’ve used Tushmate’s other diaper and love that one so much.
