Tots Bots Stretch Fitteds and covers quickly became my go-to night time diapering system about a year ago. When a local mom decided to de-stash some Easy Fits, I couldn’t resist their soft interiors and unique patterns. So, it will come as no surprise that I am delighted to try their newest AI2 cloth diaper and share a Tots Bots PeeNut Review!
The Tots Bots PeeNut AI2 cloth diaper brings the best of its predecessors, with a twist. You still get buttery soft fabrics against baby’s skin, a trim fit, durable aplix, and some of the best prints in the business. With the PeeNut, you also find cost savings and convenience of a !ll-in-Two (AI2) system.
Tots Bots PeeNut Highlights
- 2 size, All-in-Two System If you are willing to wait until baby is in the 9 lb range, you can diaper with just one system through potty training.
- Snap In Pads (Inserts) The pads snap into the front of the cover. This makes them easy to change or to leave snapped in while washing. I do wish the inserts snapped in the back as well, for a more secure fit.
- 3-in-1 PeeNut Pads Each PeeNut set comes with light and medium absorbency pads that can be snapped together for maximum absorbency.
- Stay Dry Flaps Tuck your pads into these handy flaps in the front and back to help lock in moisture and contain messes.
- Fabric Along Cover Elastics Most parents don’t want the PUL touching baby’s skin, especially in contrast to the super soft bamboo pads. This fabric keeps baby comfy, although I’d love to see it a soft bamboo as well.
- Durable Aplix I know that aplix gets a bad rap in the cloth diapering world, but this aplix is up to the challenge and makes the best fit and quickest diaper changes possible.
- Covers and Pads Sold Separately
- Generous Sizing
- Space Saving
- Cost Effective A PeeNut Birth to Potty Kit costs just under $300 (depending on the exchange rate with pounds)
- Made in the UK
Design
The PeeNut AI2 system combines a reusable cover with a removable insert. The outer waterproof cover is made to be wiped down and reused with a new insert two to three times. This is especially handy for traveling because you can put a cover and insert on baby, then pack one additional cover and several inserts in the diaper bag. This can be a huge space saver for storing and traveling with diapers. It also means cost savings because you can cloth diaper one baby with just 8 wraps and 16 to 20 3-in-1 inserts, starting at 9 lbs with size 2 or starting at 6 lbs for size 1. The cover can also be used with fitteds, flats, or prefolds and has room for an additional insert, if you prefer extra absorbency at night.
Fit
I tried the Size 2 Tots Bots PeeNut AI2 (9 to 35 lbs) on my 14 month-old son, who is tall and slim.He wears the PeeNut on the first rise setting with one insert and the second rise setting with two. For comparison, he uses the second rise setting on the Tots Bots AIO and on the Tots Bots Size 2 Cover (over a fitted snapped down on the second rise). The PeeNut is definitely more generously sized and should last well into potty training. The size 1 is designed to fit 6 to 18 lbs and might be a better choice for newborns or trimmer babies.
The size 2 is designed to fit from 9 lbs up and would definitely require pulling the wings up to fit securely on a smaller baby. With just one insert, slim Sebastian has some serious wings. This doesn’t affect the function of the diaper at all and the diaper maintains a slim fit. I think the biggest bulk you see is the extra room in the bum area. We have never needed to size clothing up or down, though, which is an excellent sign of a trim diaper.
The Elastic at the top back of the diaper and the terrific aplix closures also make these diapers a cinch to get a good, comfortable fit quickly. Tots Bots were clearly made with a baby’s comfort in mind, from the fit, to the ease of diapering, to the cozy fabrics.
Sebastian is at the solids stage now, so this diaper had no trouble containing whatever he threw at it. I did find that the covers were not always reusable after a poop because the cover would become soiled. This is a common problem with the AI2 design and one of the issues with fabric on the side elastics. I suspect that this would be even more of an issue with EBT poops and this is where a second set of snaps to secure the pads in the back could make a difference.
Absorbency
The 3-in-1 PeeNut Pad is definitely where the PeeNut shines! Each pad comes with two inserts; one light and one medium absorbency. The smaller (light) insert snaps under the larger (medium) insert for maximum absorbency. The inserts can be used separately or combined for increased absorption, depending on your baby’s needs.
Each insert (or pad, as Tots Bots calls them), is made of buttery soft bamboo and a small amount of microfiber. The bamboo makes for a trim fitting, soft, super absorbent insert. The microfiber helps the inserts dry quicker.
A baby in the smaller range would use the light pad alone and an older baby would use the medium pad. We found the larger insert to be sufficient alone for daytime and short naps, but preferred to double up for night time. I will admit that I still fall back on my Tots Bots fitteds and covers for night time, simply because we’ve had success with them for so long. You could definitely use the PeeNut system successfully alone, though.
Fabrics
I feel a special connection to Tots Bots because of the time we spent living in London. Their prints remind me of our time there and truly capture the spirit of the UK. I’m enchanted by their unique print selections and covet their special Royal Birthday edition. You can easily spot a Tots Bots print and you won’t find them replicated elsewhere. I adore how their prints defy gender stereotypes and utilize bold colors and distinctive designs. I would love to have every nursery rhyme themed diaper. If any brand could convert me into a cloth diaper print “collector,” Tots Bots would be it!
Tots Bots sent Sebastian the bold Pumpkin orange solid. While I always prefer prints over solids, this color is right up my alley. I like how it stands out and can’t wait to pair it with patterned baby legs and a t-shirt come summer.
Have you tried the Tots Bots PeeNut yet? Which feature most intrigues you?
