Convenient isn’t always the first word we think of when it comes to cloth diapers, but the All-in-Two is a convenience game-changer. With the Best Bottom Cloth Diaper System, you get the ease of a snap-in insert combined with the convenience of a wipe-able cover that can be used multiple times. This means buying less covers, saving more money, and enjoying more space in your diaper bag!
Nicki’s Diapers sent me the popular Best Bottom AI2 system to review, including one Totally Tie Die cover and two snap-in inserts. I’m a fan of AI2s for cost-saving and convenience, but I’ve yet to try Best Bottom cloth diapers. A blogging friend teased me that I would soon become a part of the Best Bottom fan club.
I immediately noticed one feature that I loved – double leg gussets to prevent leaks – and one feature that I’m less certain about – a wipe-able PUL-only cover that could potentially lay against baby’s skin. I gave the cover an inserts a pre-wash, then put the adorable tie-dye cover on my 20 month-old son.
AI2 Design
Did you know that Nicki from Nicki’s Diapers designed the Best Bottom diaper? She wanted to simplify cloth diapering with a system that is easy to use, wash, and re-use. With the Best Bottom system, the one-size cover can be used from birth to potty training. The inserts come in three sizes for a better fit and the covers can be wiped down between uses.
Here’s how the Best Bottom System works:
- Adjust front snaps for sizing.
- Snap correct size insert into diaper.
- Put diaper on baby and go!
- When baby needs a diaper change, remove soiled insert and snap clean one in. You may want to wipe or air dry the cover between uses – this is all personal preference.
- Put diaper on baby and re-use multiple times.
I really appreciate the design of the Best Bottom cover and never experienced any leaks while using it on my son. We found a comfortable fit and the inserts did not slide or stick out of the cover, as can sometimes happen with AI2s. I especially liked the addition of elastic to the front and back of the waist for a snug, flexible fit.
The inserts proved absorbent and I thought they would make for a bulkier fit, but I was pleasantly surprised. I’m a bit torn about the 3 sizes of inserts, however. Insert sizing is Small: birth-14lbs, Medium: 11-22lbs, Large: 16-35lbs.
While newborn inserts are a standard purchase, most AI2 inserts are designed to fit the remaining time for convenience and cost savings. Best Bottom does say that many families skip the medium insert and the cover is wipe-able, so the cost savings might be equivalent to other brands with different features.
Materials
If you are seeking a cloth diaper manufactured in the USA, then Best Bottom is an excellent choice. Best Bottoms use as many made in the USA raw materials as possible and the entire shell uses materials from the USA. The Stay Dry insert that we tried is made from a soft polyester, nylon blend that is cozy against baby’s skin.
If you are seeking an earth-friendly diaper, Best Bottoms is also a great selection. All Best Bottoms cloth diapers are made in US factories, supporting the local economy and reducing their environmental impact.
Fit
To be completely honest, I was concerned that Best Bottoms would have a bulky fit because of the insert style. I’ve tried similar AI2s that proved bulky, so the Best Bottom diaper surprised me. The insert comes in three sizes, so you can get the best possible fit for your little one. No folding or other insert acrobatics needed. The insert is also identical on both sides, so you don’t need to worry about remembering which way to snap it in – just snap and go.
I was also relieved to find that the insert fit snugly around baby, so the PUL from the cover did not come against baby’s skin like I feated. The double gussets curved around baby’s legs, with the soft material of the elastic resting against his skin. This may not be the slimmest diaper we’ve tried, but it provides a comfortable, leak-free fit that leaves room for extra inserts.
Absorbency
The Best Bottom cloth diaper provides excellent day and nap time absorbency for my toddler. We need an extra insert at night, but that is too be expected for an older child. I think this diaper would work well with a stay-dry insert alone for a younger child. You can also buy overnight inserts for better absorbency.
We did find that the recommended cover change per poopy diaper a day proved a good recommendation. While the insert is great at absorbing, poop often got trapped in the cover and even covered the edges of the elastic. The cover kept everything in, but simply wiping down the cover for the next insert wouldn’t do.

My fave feature of best bottoms is the double layer of pul. I have yet to see a diaper cover like it!! Just makes it seem more sturdy.

Your review has me excited to try the Daddy Love that came this week! I haven’t tried Smart Bottoms, but I had to have that print! Now, I’m looking forward to trying it out and won’t hesitate to get more in the future.
I’m most excited about the ability to reuse the cover. My stash is still quite small and getting more use out of each diaper is a big plus, right now.

I just bought the Daddy Love print and can’t wait to surprise my husband with a diaper dedicated to him on Father’s Day. (I think I’ll like it more than him, but it’s the thought that counts, right? :D)
I love the double gusset feature. I didn’t get any inserts, so it would be cool to try some.

I haven’t tried the best bottoms yet but I only use prefolds/flats and covers. They are extremely cute and are on my try list especially since I’ll have two in diapers in about 3 months.
