I’ve used eco-friendly detergent to clean cloth diapers for years and used commercially and homemade cleaning solutions around the house. I generally find that cleaners don’t need chlorine bleach, synthetic fragrances, and sulfuric acid to do the job of keeping a home clean. I’ll confess that I haven’t used many non-toxic cleaners in my dishwasher before. Getting dishes clean is so tricky to begin with, it’s hard to try something new. Thankfully, I gave Mama Suds’ Dishwasher Powder ago because this non-toxic, small business solution leaves our dishes sparkling clean!
Why Non-Toxic?
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) cautions consumers that manufacturers are not required by law to list ingredient for cleaning products. This means that companies can use highly toxic ingredients without disclosure to consumers. EWG explains,”The use of vague ingredient descriptions like “surfactant,” “cleaning agent,” or “preservative” on cleaning products does not provide adequate hazard data for consumers on what chemicals they are putting in their homes.” This doesn’t mean all mainstream detergents are highly toxic, but it does make it challenging for consumers to make educated decisions about their products.
No Hidden Ingredients
EWG gives Mama Suds an “A” rating as a non-toxic choice. This means that all of Mama Suds Dishwasher Powder ingredients are fully disclosed and consumers can rate them for different toxic concerns, such as respiratory, allergy, and environmental. When it comes to grading Mama Suds, these concerns are all mild, so the product receives an “A”!
What’s Inside
Mama Suds Automatic Dishwasher Powder is made to use after dishes have been scraped and rinsed. You then add in 1/2 to 2 scoops (we only needed 1) in the soap tray per load. You can also add distilled white vinegar (very inexpensive) to the rinse compartment to enhance your results. This product is safe for septic systems, vegan, and cruelty-free.
Cost Comparison
I selected multiple options from the EWG’s 17 “A” rated dishwasher detergents to see a cost comparison. Supporting small business is important to me, along with avoiding toxins and caring for the environment. I wanted to know if Mama Suds could allow me to do all three and not break the bank. I visited Amazon for price comparisons, but not all manufacturers say how much per load, making comparisons to powders a bit tricky.
Mama Suds Automatic Dishwasher Powder 90 loads = .18 per load.
Mama Suds Automatic Dishwasher Powder60 loads = .26 per load.
Nature Clean Automatic Dishwasher Pacs 60 loads = .29 per load
Seventh Generation Automatic Dishwasher Detergent Concentrated Pacs, Free & Clear 45 loads = .36 per load.
Our Experience
We only need just under a scoop of Mama Suds to fill our dishwasher, so we will get many loads from this little bag. I’ve used this detergent without mentioning it to my husband and mom because I wanted to see if they would notice a difference from our regular detergent. No one noticed a difference and I didn’t even add vinegar to every load! We rinse hard stuff off of our dishes before putting them in the dishwasher and do not run a pre-rinse.
