Watching The Voice Auditions this season is mesmerizing. For the first time, the coaches chairs are filled with two women and they are unique, powerful, and talented. Alicia Keys is confident, sincere, and refreshingly make-up free. When she speaks, the room is quiet and you can feel the emotion and depth of her words. Alicia Keys says, “I see you” and you believe her. She doesn’t tell contestants that they are physically beautiful, but that they are beautiful. As I watch The Voice this season, I consistently think, “Talk to your daughter like Alicia Keys” and she will grow up to be unique, confident, and courageous.
Too often, we revert to calling girls “princess” and “pretty” instead of complimenting intelligence, kindness, humor, talent, and more. These clips are just from the beginning of what I anticipate will be a season full of gems from Alicia Keys of ways to speak to our daughters from the heart.
I don’t want to be like anybody else. And I don’t want you to be like anybody else. You were born to show people what love sounds like. (Watch at 4:40)
You are such an individual and I would help refine that individuality. Don’t ever lose that for anyone. (Watch at 3:27)
I feel like you’re coming to a place where you want to ask yourself, ‘What’s Courteney all about? What greatness is Courteney ready to step in?’ And I see that. (Watch 2:47)
For me, it’s about what we become on the journey. How we can become the most empowered, powerful version of ourselves. (Watch at 3:57)
Do you watch The Voice? What are some of your favorite Alicia Keys quotes?

I don’t watch the voice or any shows like that but I like in her new song she says ” I don’t need your opinionI’m not waiting for your o.k I’ll never be perfect, but at least now I’m brave”

I agree – having Alicia Keys on this season has really renewed my interest in this show! She is a real role model, isn’t she?

I love Alicia! And I didn’t know she is in the show. I’m going to watch the whole season. It got to be interesting with her in the show.

I agree with this so much. I always felt less than my more physically attractive classmates growing up even though I was often better at certain skills than they were I felt like the way I look was somehow more important. The world today is just so focused on how we look and what we wear that our talents are often overlooked. I want my daughter to grow up knowing how amazing and smart and talented she is not worrying whether or not she’s pretty enough.

Thank you for reminding us to empower our children to be great in their uniqueness.

I LOVE Alicia Keys!! She is such a strong and intelligent woman! I absolutely agree that we should raise our daughters and speak to them as strong and intelligent women instead of “princesses”. We should raise them with values and respect for themselves and others instead of feeling “superior” or more important than everyone else. Princesses rule the lady and women learn it takes a villiage 🙂

We should talk to our sons this way also. So inspiring.
