My kids hate haircuts. Every trim is a battle and a bribe and I find myself asking, “Why does this have to be so hard?” Shear Madness Haircuts for Kids clearly knows my pain because they created a salon just for kids and it’s awesome! Looking for a bright, fun, kid-friendly place to get kid’s haircuts in the Des Moines area? Shear Madness Haircuts for Kids is the place.
We scheduled four haircuts on Saturday and I put off telling my kids in advance. The normal complaining ensued, with each one insisting, “I don’t’ need a haircut!” My oldest son complained the loudest until we arrived at the salon, where a cheerful receptionist greeted us with a big grin and a friendly, “Hello!” The kids immediately oohed and ahhed over the waiting area/toy store filled with Melissa and Doug, trucks and trains, stuffed animals, create your own headbands, and more. This kept them occupied while I signed in and, before we knew it, four stylists welcomed my kids into the salon area.
The little kids had their choice of a motorcycle or cars to sit in and watch a show while getting a trim. As it was the Saturday before Halloween, the stylist wore fun costumes and quickly helped each child find a show to watch. My ten year-old daughter’s stylist led her to a big kids chair and she immersed herself in Minecraft while the stylist and I discussed her curls. Frowns faded away from the three older kids and suddenly a haircut didn’t seem so bad after all.
Sebastian had the most challenging time, as this was only his second hair cut. His stylist proved undeterred as he moved, shifted, and gave her sideways glares. My five year-old’s stylists adapted to his reserved nature, letting him enjoy the show without much chatter. The stylist helping my daughter knew just what to do with her curls and even helped us find an awesome product to enhance them. Each kid enjoyed a quick, efficient, haircut and only wished it could have lasted a bit longer. 
I laughed as we left the salon because my oldest son, most vocal in his complaints before we arrived, felt his hair would need to be cut again soon. He wasn’t too excited about the movie selections, but he couldn’t wait to come back and play Minecraft!

Atmosphere
This salon is a kid’s dream! The atmosphere is fun, bright, and inviting. The toy store is the first thing kids see, so this keeps them entertained while they wait. Toys vary in price, but there are definitely items kids can buy with a few week’s allowance. Just be prepared for them to ask to purchase something. You don’t have to worry about your kids disturbing other customers here, either. This is a relaxed place where kids feel welcome.

Services
This is a kid-focused salon, providing kid’s haircuts, bang trims, shampoos, and comb-outs. Mom and dad can even schedule an appointment if they like. Prices range from $6.95 for a bang trim, $15.95 for a haircut, and $25.95 for a shampoo and haircut.

You can also book your baby’s first haircut, special occasion up-dos, ear piercing, and spa services. Spa packages are available for boys and girls! This is definitely the place we’ll come if my daughter decides to get her ears pierced.
Parties
A group of very excited girls enjoyed a birthday party in the Diva Lounge during our visit. Parties start at $150 for up to 6 kids and it is $25 for each additional guest. Parties are available with a sparkly theme that includes spa services, karaoke, and shopping for your own party favor. Super Hero parties are also an option, with capes, masks, and color gelled hair.

This place seems awesome! There’s nothing like this around me but I’ve been lucky enough that my kids don’t really hate getting their hair cut.
