Thirsties Duo Diaper Review and Giveaway!

When I read that Thirsties was adding a new 2-sized pocket diaper to their line, I immediately wanted to know more. I use the Thirsties Duo Wrap for my fitteds and prefolds and love the fit and durability. The Duo Wrap fits trimly, has sturdy Aplix tabs that do not pill or bend, and the leg gussets prevent leaks. I thought, “if the new diaper provides these same features, as well as the convenience of a pocket, I’m in.”

Thirsties was kind enough to send me a new Ocean Blue Duo Diaper in size two to try for my 1 year-old son. The Duo Diaper, as well as the Duo Wrap, is a “2 size diaper” to provide the best for your baby, whether tall or short, think or chunky. The generous size of the diaper impressed me and Ezra could clearly use it through his potty training years. The well-fitting rise also caught my attention because we often struggle with a pesky low-rise problems with other diapers. My long, chunky baby has turned into a tall, lean baby and I could see how this diaper could easily accommodate both body types.

When I removed the diaper from the package, I immediately noticed the incredibly soft microfleece liner that goes against baby’s skin. Thirsties materials explain that “the ultra-soft mircofleece on the inside protects baby’s skin from wetness and also resists staining.” I found this claim to be absolutely true – the microterry and hemp combo insert can be soaked through and the liner remains basically dry to the touch!

The final feature that I absolutely love is the sleeve design. While I like that pocket diapers allow you to control absorbency, I am not crazy about reaching in to remove the soiled insert. With the Duo Diaper, you don’t need to remove the soiled inserts before washing because they agitate out on their own in the wash! The two duo openings also allow for easy stuffing from either side. This is definitely a caregiver/grandparent/babysitter friendly diaper!

We tested this diaper over a couple of weeks and put it through all of the necessary tests – night time, nap time, poop, and day travel. Over this period of time, we never experienced a leak, blowout, or stain. I was so impressed, I added additional Thirsties Duo Diapers to my stash and now find myself reaching for this diaper first. Based on my experience with this diaper, I give it the following ratings (out of 5 stars):

Cost: *** Suggested Retail $18.95. Only $1 more than the Bum Genius 3.0, this diaper is within range of popular one-sized diapers. Since you will need to purchase two sizes over baby’s lifetime, I do wish the price was lower.

Fit: **** I love that the diaper is slim and well-suited for different body types. The signature leg gussets move with baby and prevent leaks. I only wish the stuffing was slightly slimmer-fitting, but this is a minor complaint.

Absorbency: ***** This diaper is ultra-absorbent, while the layer next to baby stays dry. The effectiveness of the insert outweighs any complaint I have about the fit.

Durability: ***** The sturdy Aplix and fold-over laundry tabs work extremely well and don’t pill, get filled with lint, or fold like I’ve experienced with other diapers. This diaper holds up well in the wash and has remained vibrant and stain-free through multiple washes.

Color/Appearance: *** I like the available colors, but wish more bold, primary colors were available. The lovely ocean blue provided for Ezra would work well for a boy or girl, as would most of the colors. The diaper is vibrant and well-fitting, so it looks cute on baby. Compared to some of the other prints or designer diapers I’ve seen, the look of the Thirsties definitely leans more toward functional/practical.

Overall Rating: **** I would definitely recommend the Thirsties Duo Diaper diaper to new and experienced cloth diapering caregivers.
