I’m just watching the first season of The Closer now. I know I’m behind, but that’s the way I do tv these days. I used to juggle tons of shows, schedule to watch them, or use my DVR so shows couldn’t rule my world. But cable’s been gone (and all reception with it) for awhile now. We Netflix instead and so I’m generally behind the times.
That being said, I’m absolutely loving the instant gratification of tv on DVD. The Closer has received good buzz and I’ve always liked Kyra Sedgwick, so I decided to give it a try. Now I’m annoyed that there’s only 3 episodes a disc because Brenda Johnson has quickly joined the ranks of my favorite characters – Veronica Mars, Buffy, and Lorelai Gilmore – and I want to watch the next episode now.
Truth is, there are tons of murder mystery/cop shows on tv. I suppose if I watched more syndicated tv, this might seem like a drop in the barrel to me. But I found the first episode absolutely engaging and wanted to see more. As I thought about this show today, I wondered why I enjoy renting it, but I’m not really eager to grab the latest CSI or Law and Order.
Then it struck me…while I like to know “who done it,” The Closer is all about the way she solves the crime, the inner workings of her mind, her unique way of doing things. Usually, I’m excited to get to the end more to figure out how she solves a crime than I am to learn the solution. Plus, I like that quirky mix of charm, steel, bumbling absent-minded, take-charge gal. The show is so character-driven without being like a soap-opera. Brenda feels real with her sweets-addiction/attempt to resist, over sized bag, and constant searching for her glasses. And, since she is someone I can relate to, when Brenda moves confidently and refuses to apologize, I find myself sitting up a bit taller and feeling a bit braver.
Can’t wait to see what happens next (so please don’t give it away)…
I like the closer. I like the ensemble cast, some really good characters and actors.
I like Kyra Sedgwick from her movies, but she’s not my favorite character in this role. Something about her mannerisms, her facial expressions, even her clothing, to me doesn’t fit the role.
But I do like the way she always gets the crook with her interrogations.
