The Amazing Birthday Cake!

My hubby asked me the other day what I wanted to do to celebrate my birthday this year. My response: Not plan my party. You see, I love birthdays. They remind me of wonderful celebrations as a kid and they’ve always been something a bit magical for me. Last year, I planned my own party and made the cake, food, etc. I had fun, but I was a bit bummed about it (and about turning 30). This year, I didn’t care if my husband and daughter whipped up a boxed cake and topped it with some pre-made frosting, I just wanted a bit of the celebration planned for me.

The big 3-1 is actually tomorrow, but my husband arranged for a few friends to come over for some lunch and cake after church today. Princess really wanted to make a cake (birthdays are her favorite thing ever), so I suggested he just do a simple one with her. I was shocked when he pulled out my free trial Taste of Home magazine and told me to pick out one of the prize-winning cakes from the issue. I ended up selecting this gorgeous chocolate cake with strawberries on top, half-expecting him to be deterred. But they made a shopping list together, got the ingredients, and he spent a huge chunk of his Saturday making me this cake!

I truly can not express how much the time and effort my husband put into this cake means to me! This is not something he enjoys doing and he couldn’t have given me a better gift! We had a few friends over after church for lunch and cake as well (great planning, honey!). And tomorrow is my actual birthday, where we’ll get to go out to dinner with friends, so this is turning out to be an awesome birthday! :0)

It tastes as good as it looks – not too rich, but just right!
I hope my wish comes true!

  9. He did an amazing job! I really want a piece of cake now… LOL!
    You’re so lucky! Maybe I’ll convince my DH to make mine next year?? I’m thinking I’ll get a big fat NO on that one… Although he’d probably go for making me dinner…
