When we first started cloth diapering, an extra newborn insert in any pocket would do just fine for bed time. Naps were easier – we didn’t add anything extra and things were fine. I’d hear people using the phrase “heavy wetter” and, honestly, I would think “Come on. How bad can it really be?” Then our little guy hit one and transitioned from nursing to whole milk. Suddenly, our old standby diapers simply would not do at nap or bedtime. Our Bum Genius 3.0 would be soaked through the covers. I knew we’d reached the dreaded “heavy wetter” stage and I’d have to find some new solutions – and fast!
As I looked into better night time coverage, I realized that a heavy wetter could easily be a deal breaker for some parents. You can only stuff a diaper so full. A baby wearing a diaper stuffed to its limits and needing a size up in pajamas is not exactly the cutest solution. You still want your baby to be able to move comfortably in a night time diaper. You also want to trust that they won’t wake up screaming and soaking wet! In fact, I have a wonderful friend who puts disposables on her second baby at night because she just doesn’t want to deal with this hassle. I totally understand where she is coming from. I told myself that I wouldn’t got that route, though, because I want to either cloth diaper full time or not at all.
In my quest for different diaper styles, I discovered Monkey Toe Diapers. Susan, the Monkey Toe’s seamstress, has permission to sew Fern & Faerie, Very Baby and Sugar Plum Baby Products. She has worked with heavy wetters herself, so she believes that fitted diapers are the best cloth diaper solution. At Monkey Toe Diapers, she sews fitteds, covers, one-sized diapers, and the occasional pocket.
Susan was generous enough to agree to let me review a medium hemp micro suede Sugar Plum Baby Night Diaper and I was thrilled! When this diaper arrived, my first thought was “luxurious.” The diaper we received has a cream outer layer and a rich, plum colored inside. The fleece is incredibly soft and I immediately thought this was something I would like to spend the night having against my skin!
The Sugar Plum Night Time Diaper means business – this is definitely for night wear and adds some serious bulk to baby. When you use the included soaker (and we always do), the diaper has 10 layers. I don’t usually cut and paste for reviews, but I believe that this information about the construction of the diaper is so impressive, I wanted you to see it for yourself:
The diaper body:
- 2 Layers of absorbent fabric
- Lined in micro-fleece(100% Polyester), micro-suede(100% Polyester) or bamboo velour(70% rayon made of bamboo/30% organic cotton)
- The medium and large sizes of the diaper feature hip snaps and cross-over snaps
- Poly Resin snap closures
- We use lasitin elastic in the legs and back for the gathers to contain the mess
The soaker Pad:
- We use a tri-fold soaker pad and added snaps to help keep everything in place.
- This soaker pad allows for you to have 6 layer in the wet zone but only 2 and 1/2 layers to dry. Quicker dry times with openning up the soaker pad. The half is the micro fleece, micro suede or bamboo velour that is sewn down the middle.
- Also included is a doubler
- The soaker pad is snapped in to the body of the diaper
After trying the Sugar Plum Night Time Diaper, I highly recommend it for your heavy wetter! Based on my experience with this diaper, I give it the following ratings (out of 5 stars):
Cost: *** to **** $24 to $30, depending on size and fabrics selected. I, honestly, feel torn about reviewing the cost here. It is a higher price for one diaper, but reasonably so due to all of the fabric involved and the included soaker. You also have to consider the cost of a cover for it. This is an investment, but a good one, and I think you could purchase 2 to 3 in one size and be set for your night time needs.
Fit: **** This diaper is “beefy,” as the website puts it, but it also does its job. I always put it on Ezra right before bedtime because it is not easy to be active in. This is definitely for night time wear and I do wish it wasn’t quite so bulky. I am not a big fan of snaps, though, and I think the snaps are easy to use. I also think the diaper fits well without leaving lines on the legs.
Absorbency: ***** This is a workhorse diaper. With a cover, nothing is getting through this baby. When Ezra has the Sugar Plum Baby Night Diaper on, I don’t worry about leaks at all.
Durability: ***** This diaper has held up well to wear and washing. The fabric looks as great today as it did ten washes ago. It goes just fine through the dryer and takes a surprisingly short time to dry, considering all of the bulk.
Color/Appearance: *** This is clearly a well made diaper and I especially the bold inside cover. The outside is a bit plain, but it is going under a cover, so the quality and absorbency are the most important part for me.
Overall Rating: **** I would definitely recommend the Sugar Plum Baby Night Time Diaper to anyone seeking a serious heavy wetter solution! Pair this cozy fitted with your favorite cover (I like it with a Wonder Wrap) and you’re good to go for a leak free night!
Thank you so much to Sarah for sending this diaper for me to try! I recommend heading on over to Monkey Toe Diapers to check out her wonderful selection!
