Clothes used to be a bit of an obsession for me. I loved shopping at Ross, seeking out sales, and searching through my overcrowded closet to select an outfit each day. While I may not have been the prettiest or thinnest woman in the room, I felt like I had a definitive sense of style that set me apart. Take a wardrobe that you love and mix it with a dash of confidence and I think this is how you find your signature style.
Since I’ve entered mommyhood, my wardrobe has diminished during spring cleaning, expanded to include maternity clothes, adapted for nursing, and changed sizes. It is not nearly as impressive as it was in its hey day and much of my budget is, rightly, directed elsewhere. But every once in awhile I treat myself to something special (or my mom does for my birthday). While my wardrobe might not include the quantity of items it once did, I still have some pieces I love.
Last year, I found a little black dress on a sales rack at Kohls. I thought it wouldn’t work for me, but discovered that I felt amazing in it. The only catch: it won’t adapt for nursing (so I had to wait to wear it until my son finished nursing) and there will (hopefully) be some pregnancy months in the future where it won’t fit, then nursing again. So, if I’m going to wear this dress, I need to wear it now.
My husband, Tim, and I planned a double date with some friends Friday to a Japanese grill. I decided to put on my little black dress, prep my hair for an up do in hot rollers, and glam up the make up.This came as a surprise for Tim, so I enjoyed his reaction when he walked in the door after returning from work. I asked him to take a few pictures so I could atend the Mommyologist Prom and then we headed out. My girlfriends made my evening when we dropped the kids off for babysitting at a friend’s by telling me I had “hot calves” and I think I walked with a bit more confidence the rest of the evening.
I adore this dress. It’s the perfect mix of modestly, sophistication, and also has a bit of the retro vibe. I think this dress also represents a new confidence in myself and acceptance of me just the way I am. I know that this dress doesn’t hide every flaw and isn’t perfect from every angle, but I don’t care. This look feels so me and I feel incredibly sexy and happy to be in my own shoes when I wear it…and the way my husband looks at me when I walk by helps too.

LOVE this dress! Its definitely the perfect mixture of sexy sophisticated and classic ๐

Ooh, you look very pretty! I’m stopping by from the prom to mingle. No fancy dress post up though (I know, I’m a slacker! I prefer to think of it as “fashionably late”)

I LOVE it! Look at your little tiny waist! Very very retro and sexy.
I’m holding on to a handful of those non-nursing, non-maternity dressing in the hopes that some day I will be neither breastfeeding or pregnant. Maybe in 2017.
I am so jealous of people like you who can pull off the retro thing—and the belt thing! I can’t do either one!
You look fantabulous and I’m glad your hubs appreciated it. Even better that you actually went out, whereas I never left my house for prom. oh well.
