All parents want to discover music that they can enjoy, not just endure, with their kids. Both of my kids love to dance, sing, and get their groove on. I’ve found free radio sites that help us to discover quality kids music to be a lifesaver some days. So, when The Musebox contacted me about a new recording being released for a band called The Rattles, billed as music everyone can groove to, I was interested.
The concept of the band is a group of four animated animal friends – a cat, a lizard, a hippo, and a goat, who start a band together. The back story and concept is fun, with an introduction to the band, music videos, games, and more at Rattles Rock. Recent reviews of the album have given it high praise as something families can get into and enjoy together.
The kids and I had the opportunity to listen to the album, which definitely has a Beatles and Monkeys vibe. I cranked the music up for the kids and invited them to come listen. Both continued playing and I kept it on in the background. My little ones, 1 and 4, didn’t really stop to enjoy, dance, or sing along. They didn’t dislike the music, but it simply didn’t draw them in like other children’s bands can, cluing them into something fun to do, learn, or laugh at. Since we also don’t tend to watch many music videos on the computer with them, the band back story didn’t have much influence on their experience. For me personally, the music was good, but similar to other bands with a Beatles groove. There weren’t any songs in particular that stood out to me.
This was our personal experience, but I’m sure this music would be a great fit for another family. It might also be more exciting for children who become engaged in the music videos or possibly in a future book or television tie in.
