I’ve started pinning and sewing the sheets together for my kid’s Christmas gifts. They are the first part of our plan to redecorate Ella’s room as a big Christmas surprise. We hope to get bunk beds to help save space from the CSN stores. They have such a broad selection of items, from picture frames, to toy organizers, to bar furniture, to bunkbeds, it’s a great resource when decorating a room.
Now that the quilts are a reality, I can really begin to envision the room. I love working with the fabric I selected and picturing them cuddling up with their favorites – cars and horses – each night. My grandmother made quilts for us growing up and they were often the simple, tied variety. I have two of them to this day, incredibly worn, just now starting to come apart 25 years later. One sits on my blanket holder in the family room and cuddling up with it on a cold night to watch tv makes me nostalgic for my childhood.
I hope that 25 years from now my children will have their quilts somewhere in their homes – as extra blankets to grab when their cold, handed down to their children, or even in a memory box. Putting these quilts togehter has become such a pleasure for me! From the hours spent searching for just the right sheets or fabric (you wouldn’t believe how rare affordable horse bedding is), scouring ebay, collecting JoAnn’s coupons, to prepping the sheets, and the endless pinning, I’ve loved it all. There is something so gratifying and enjoyable about creating something by hand for someone else. I know this project is simple compared to some of the complex things moms make, but I think my children will know how much love I put into them.
The more I think about redecorating their room, the more excited I get! It began with special quilts for each kid and new bunk beds. Now I am looking at painting and finding affordable wall decals to add a special touch. This week, I thought it would be special to have a new photo of our family taken so I could hang that in their room. It would be special to also print out some of the sweet photos I have of them hugging and kissing as a little collage. Add a picture of Christ here and I think it’ll be just right.
I can’t wait for you to share pictures!! I love that you’re putting so much thought and heart into it.
Sounds wonderful! I’m sure they are going to love it AND cherish their quilts for years to come.
Hope you post pictures when it’s done!
