Just as we’d hoped, language seems to be a huge key in helping our Ezra control his inner Mr. Hyde and reveal more of his gentler Dr. Jekyll side! He tries out new words daily, especially anything his big sister seems to be saying. My absolute favorite phrase of the moment: Help me, please. It’s like a little peace of heaven coming out of a nearly-two-year-old’s mouth!
This little man has clearly comprehended much of what we’ve told him for quite some time. The ability to express his thoughts and feelings in return has come more gradually, causing obvious frustration. The transformation that’s occurred in just a few weeks now that his vocabulary bursts with words such as drink, book, please, mine, ball, shoe, no, nose (while pointing), and more is incredible. Ezra’s ability to mimic new words he hears is also terrific. He still depends on “mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm” as filler for words he finds to challenging to pronounce and we love it. His bright, big eyes light up when he declares the word “car!” and he thinks that toy cars and trucks are a gift from heaven. I simply adore seeing how pleased he is with his new communication skills.
Beyond language, Daddy and I (and sometimes Ella) are also the new beneficiaries of increased affection and cuddles. Ezra’s never been very cuddly, even as a small baby. He will now soothe with a pat, an arm rub, and a hug if you are sad. I’m still a bit surprised when he comes up unexpectedly to wrap his arms around me for a cuddle or when he let’s me carry him for a bit after helping him out of his crib. The best mommy moments come when the kids decide to compete in a way to give mom loves, alternately bestowing hugs and kisses on me.
Life is not perfect, of course. We continue to struggle with fits, tantrums, hitting, and regular fights. But I’m praying that we’ve turned a corner here. The irrational fits that seemed never-ending and couldn’t be stopped once they started have definitely increased. Ezra seems more patient with listening to alternatives and explanations as well. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if I could say we had the “odious ones” rather than the “terrible twos”?! A girl can dream, right?

Mindy,
You are right—language skills can prompt a great deal of frustration—on both sides! I’m glad there’s been some progress lately. I think Ella and Ezra could pass for twins if it weren’t for the size/age difference. They are both SO adorable and look soooooo much alike!
