Cow Patties AI2 Cloth Diaper Review

With the increasing popularity of cloth diapers, consumers are faced with a terrific problem: How to choose between the variety of cloth diapers on the market today. So, when I come across a brand that supports a small business, creates custom diapers, is affordable, and high quality, I’m thrilled to share it with you on The Inquisitive Mom. Megs at Cow Patties Diapers has created just such a shop, with a variety of handmade diaper options in a fun array of fabric options.

Megs started Cow Patties in October of 2007 when she began cloth diapering and making her own diapers. She found that others were interested in her diapers as well, and a cloth diaper company featuring one of my favorite names was born.

The initial feature that first attracted me to Cow Patties (beyond the awesome name) were the amazing selection of fabric options. I am not a huge fan of pastels and find most gender neutral and boy fabrics are fairly similar among diaper makers. With Cow Patties, your options are much broader because the diapers are not mass manufactured. Instead, you can choose from great retro prints, character fabrics, sophisticated designs, plus fun and funky patterns. Cow Patties offers Cotton Wovens, Cotton Knits, Minky, and Flannels. You can even have Megs create a diaper out of fabric you’ve hand selected.

I think many cloth diapering parents are also cost-conscious and I believe Cow Patties diapers are very reasonably priced. Price is extremely important because it can be difficult to justify adding a new $25 to $30 diaper to my stash. At $8 to $18 (minky), and $14 for one-size, Cow Patties are a diaper that you can purchase without feeling guilty about the dent in your budget.

Cow Patties also offers a wide variety in style of diapers, from fitteds, to pocket fitteds, to AI2s, to pockets, to covers. They come in sized and one size, with velcro, side snaps, front snaps, or no snaps. Basically, you can have Megs custom create a diaper with the outer and inner fabric of your choice, in the style you like, with your favorite closures – for under $20! This makes Cow Patties an incredibly versatile option.

We were very excited to receive an AI2 for review, a style of diaper I haven’t tried before. Cow Patties describes and AI2 this way: “These have an inner fabric (too many to list) a PUL layer and if you so choose a cute outer fabric. Bamboo fleece insert snaps in for 6 layers of absorbency. Requires snaps or Velcro to close.”

Our AI2 is one-sized and Megs chose an adorable robot fabric on a black background, with a soft fleece Sponge Bob on the inside (with the PUL layer hidden underneath). It uses to rows of front snaps and snaps down to adjust sizes. Ezra was crazy about the robot print and, when he doesn’t want to deal with a diaper change, I can pursued him with “Want to put on the robots?” In fact, the first time we put it on his new baby brother, Kai, he said, “My robots!”

We’ve found that our Cow Patties Diaper AI2 washes well and looks brand new after multiple washing with no pilling or fading of the fabric. It is a true one size and both my 10 to 11 lb baby and maybe 28 lb toddler can wear it, although it is definitely big and bulky on the newborn. I have yet to use a one size that this is not the case with, however.

The diaper comes with a long bamboo fleece insert that is absorbent. I only wish that it was wider to contain poopy messes a bit better – with a wider insert, I think you’d only need to worry about rinsing the insert, rather than the entire diaper. We have easily used other inserts (including newborns) with our AI2, though, and they solve this problem.
