I think my need for change/to let go a bit/to let someone else take over for awhile manifested itself last night.
I had a writer’s dream assignment to interview a hair stylist and have them cut my hair simultaneously. My plan has been to grow my hair out for quite some time now. I am very bad at growing my hair out, though, because I get bored and impulsive.
It’s been a long week and extremely hot. I was thrilled to go out by myself and let Kai get his first bottle of pumped milk. When the hairstylist asked me what I wanted, I threw back my favorite question, “What would you do with my hair?” I swear he showed me a length that would leave quite a bit of hair at my shoulders. Then he started cutting.
And cutting.
And cutting.
The shoulders became the neck. Surprised, but cool with it.
The neck became more of a chin length bob. Surprised, but I can rock the bob.
Then came a surprising cut, but a turn away from the mirror for better lighting and I knew I’d surrendered to it.
Who knows why I didn’t speak up? I’m not shy. I was fascinated by his technique. Curious about where he was going. Relieved to let go and let someone else take over.
In the process, I went from this:
To this:
It’s a bit of a shock, but blessedly cool and it makes me feel sassy and sexy.
It was definitely surprising for my awesome husband, as he was pretty excited that I was growing it out. While I’ve had it very short before, this is the shortest it’s ever been in our 7 years of marriage. Thankfully, he seems to like that I experiment with my look and take risks sometimes.
It’s odd how cutting your hair makes you feel someone lighter in a hundred miniature ways. Who knows if I’ll keep it, but it’s here for now, so I might as well rock it the best I can, right?

I think your cut looks fantastic! (You look nice in purple too). ๐
I just went in for the big chop too–I entered the salon with hair halfway down my back and came home with a shoulder-length bob. Much easier to maintain with a newborn, cooler in the summer, and oh so liberating!
Sassy and sexy indeed! Love it! I wish I was brave enough to chop my hair off…it’s waist length and I’m so sick of it!
You look fabulous and younger too!
Rock it, girl!
Angie
I love it! My momma always says..”It’s hair you can grow it back.” Enjoy the freedom.
I think it’s great and you definitely can pull off the short hair. I tried when I had my son….not so great. Too round of a face but my Momma always says,”it’s hair you can grow it back.”
OH MY GOSH MINDY!! This cut on you is AMAZING, you look like a different person and your jawline is jealousy inducing. I was expecting just a simple/basic change but I was surprised, in a good way!
You look amazing!! Great choice.
Mindy, it looks fantastic! Definitely sexy and sassy! I admire your ability to do that. I’m pretty conservative with hairstyle change – always a little at a time for me ๐
And you are indeed rockin it. Short hair is definately it for you, you could pass for half whatever age you are right now. That’s meant to be a compliment ๐
wow looks great. you suit both but this cut makes you look younger i think.
Okay, I am a guy that actually digs short hair and I think it looks AWESOME! No joke.
Really cute, Mindy!
You are definitely rockin’ it! I got my hair chopped last year (not quite as short) and hated it! Kudos to you for going with the flow!
I LOVE it!!!
