When I first started my cloth diaper stash, aplix seemed the obvious way to go. Then, as my son grew and I became more adept and using cloth diapers, snaps became more appealing. For one, they looked better and seemed to secure a diaper more effectively. There was also the first time my son figured out how to undo the aplix – although he’s a pro at snaps now too. Most importantly, though, was the wear and tear on aplix. My Bum Genius and Thirsties diapers were beginning to look ragged and some of the aplix simply stopped working effectively. Rather than replace the aplix, I decided to look into replacing it with snaps.

I posted a request via my facebook page for help on how to go about adding snaps and followed a link to KAMsnaps. Their easy to navigate website immediately impressed me. www.kamsnaps.com is geared toward beginners and experts alike. For beginners like me, KAMsnaps offers a detailed, but not overly complicated, introduction to snaps. This easy-to-read FAQs page helped me to understand how snaps work, what I would need to order to get started, the standard size snap for cloth diapers, as well as the pros and cons of pliers and press dies. They also have tutorials with free templates for converting major cloth diaper brands to snaps.

While a press die looked dreamy, especially the discounted backordered option, I decided that the pliers would meet my needs. Pliers are an affordable option at $27 and I love that you can add 200 complete sets of size 20 plastic snaps (just right for cloth diapers) for 25% off with  your pliers order. I decided to order the pliers, plus 100 white and 100 brown size 20 snaps. I also added the mixed colors size 20 plastic snaps because I wanted to add a bit of whimsy to my diapers.

I have ordered from KAMsnaps twice now and received a shipping confirmation soon after hitting the “order now” button. Their committed customer service processes and ships orders quickly and answers emails in a timely manner. They also show customers their appreciation through giveaways and sales found through their KAMsnaps facebook page. Additionally, they offer free shipping on most US orders over $28 and Canadian orders over $32.

Overall, I’m impressed by my KAMsnaps pliers. They do involve a bit of a learning curve and I highly recommend carefully reading their online instructions and testing multiple snaps before beginning a project. I did not have the patience to watch a video tutorial (as I should have) and, while I read the instructions, I rushed ahead a bit too soon and learned the hard way that snaps are not easy to remove. Some of my snaps worked and looked right, but I had difficulty getting them to connect to each other properly. I wasted a huge portion of my mixed snaps doing things wrong not once, but twice (when I thought I’d solved the issue). If I’d had more patience to continue practicing with white snaps the second time around, this could have been easily avoided.

I met up with a friend last week who shared her expertise using KAMsnaps pliers with me. Truly, the fix was simple: I was using the wrong cap die. After watching her and seeing all of the beautiful projects she’d created using her KAMsnaps pliers and snaps, I knew that I’d made the right choice purchasing them.

  51. My favorite tutorial is the one for storing snaps. I’d never thought of those! Mine are just hanging out all messed up in a ziplock baggie. 🙂

  95. i read through all the tutorial selections, and the one that really popped out at me was how to convert a regular bra into a nursing bra! what an awesome idea! as a nursing mother, i have been trying to find a nursing bra (especially one in my size) for less then 40-50$ is near impossible! this will be my first project if i win!
