People always talk about age 2, but 4 is an adventure.
*Four meant a big, independent personality emerging.
*Some days found her racing ahead to be a big kid and others yearning to stay small.
*At four, a new defiance emerged, combined with her always-present strong will.
*Her creativity and vivid imagination delighted and surprised us.
*She honed her rhyming and song-writing skills, often making up a song on a whim.
*Four became the time when a love for reading meant discovering a passion for storytelling and enjoying the Hobbit read out loud with Dad.
*This was the year she could verbalize more than ever, meaning she could have “the best day ever” and “the worst day ever” all in the same day.
*At four, she also learned to wield words like a knife, sometimes like a butter knife “I’m going to live someplace else” and others like a butcher knife “I wish you weren’t my mommy!”
*She also grasped the power of an apology, sincere compliment, spontaneous hug.
*My favorite phrase from four: “Mom, I want to be like you when I grow up.” It was one of the most wonderful things anyone has ever said to me.
*At four, her younger brother became a real playmate and a true annoyance. Despite their rough days, I knew they were truly close when she quietly leaned into him, then hugged him, as he waited with her class to head in for the first day of Kindergarten.
*Ever a girly girl and fashionista, she continually wore fancy dresses and left her shoes everywhere.
*Her fascination with horses, princesses, and fairies continued and she wanted a pony cake at 5, just she did at 4.
*At 4, she opened her heart up again to her new baby brother, showering him with love and adoration.
*She approached her first day of Kindergarten relatively fearless, confident, excited, ready for a new adventure.
Yesterday, my little girl turned 5. My oldest child. Our sweetheart. She made me a mother for the first time, taught me a new kind of joy, and changed my life. She challenges me and helps me see the world in a whole new way. I feel so blessed to be her mom. And I can’t wait to see what five will bring for this amazing little person that I adore.

It makes me sad to be so far away and wish I could have seen all those stepping stones in person. Your little girl is going to an amazing person as she grows she already is.
Happy Birthday (late) to your first baby! So fun to watch them grow and learn and mature!
