My kids are still little, but I hope to recreate a bit of this magic for them each year, including creating a special cake just for them. Plus, my friend Rosemary helped make Ezra’s King for a Day even more special by sending him his very own custom Birthday crown!
My cakes are always ambitious, leading to a series of misadventures, but I try again every year. There’s the Pony Cake, Curious George Balloons, and the infamous Ice Cream Princess Cake. I’ve figured out the cake part, using this Family Fun Buttermilk Cake Recipe time and again. It’s delicious, fluffy, and sturdy enough to handle decorating. I still haven’t mastered frosting prettily and scouring the stores for those candy accents always stresses me out. Before this year, I think Ezra’s car cake proved my most successful. I decided to go simpler this year, though, and when I saw this construction cake on Pinterest, I was sold.
What I love about this cake:
It requires two simply round cakes in any flavor
The frosting is meant to look messy – it’s dirt!
The only extras required are construction toys, Oreo cookies, and I used chocolate marshmallows for rocks.
The Trio Construction Set came from Amazon for under $10 and Ezra wanted a crane for his birthday.
It’s an easy cake for a 5 year-old assistant to help decorate without stressing mom out!
What I didn’t realize about this cake: The fancy, schmancy inside!
I don’t want to steal pictures from the amazing blogger at Fredellicious, so go visit this link and see what she accomplished. I, of course, attempted this using her recipes and food coloring. It did not work so well for me – the cake recipes were difficult to halve with all the 3/4 cups/teaspoons required and the food coloring turned out poorly. I wasted two cakes before deciding to return to my tried and true buttermilk recipe. I should have followed my original and correct instinct to skip the fancy inside. My 3 year-old didn’t miss it and probably wouldn’t have appreciated it enough to justify all that effort.
My cake might not be as fancy, but Ezra loved it and all the kids “Oohed” and “Ahhed” over it!
The best part of it all? My husband decided to check the mail serendipitously right before cake time. Rosemary’s adorable custom Ezra Crown arrived just in time for us to crown our Birthday King and let him blow out the candles!
Rosemary is an amazing mama to her little sweetheart, Hadassah, and blogs about her faith, family, and attachment parenting. I always look forward to reading her beautifully written, thought-provoking, heartfelt posts. She also recently opened her own Etsy shop, Hadassah’s Closet, a place to find wonderful felt crowns for birthdays and dress up!
Rosemary made her little girl a crown for her first birthday and loved doing it so much, she wanted to make more. She decided to open her own shop with premade crowns, as well as custom crowns with names, initials, and ages. I know my Ella would love to have one of these pink butterfly crowns for dress up:
All of Rosemary’s crowns are entirely hand stitched and made with sturdy ribbon, so they are adjustable to fit a young toddler or adult. They measure 10.5″ long and 5″ high at the tip of the crown, with an extra 15″ of ribbon on each side. She sews craft foam into the body, making the crowns flexible, but firm and durable. The crowns fit comfortably on a little one’s head and stay in place, unlike many of their mass-produced counterparts. It’s also refreshing to have a toy for my child that isn’t made of easily broken plastic and doesn’t require batteries to enjoy.
I love the fact that the crowns are adjustable, making them a gift that can endure as your child grows. The design choices are whimsical, but have a sophistication that can be enjoyed by an older child. You can select from a bold, black and white, or brown color scheme, making for a crown to suit any taste. They are also well made to withstand wear and play, a definite must for toys at our house. I can imagine my son wearing his beautifully made crown while playing for years to come, making them worth the $35 investment.
