Trying to photograph my toddler for diaper reviews is a bit like asking the wind to pause for a still shot. He’s rarely still and more fascinated with being behind the camera than in front of it. On the other hand, he’s also a pretty demanding diaper tester, pushing the limits of nap time capacities, and testing whether a diaper works well with a mover. He’s also slender, with a fairly trim waist and legs, making him a much different tester than his heartier older brother was.
Kai’s been giving his new Moraki diaper a serious test over the past few weeks, allowing me to try it as a pocket, an AI2, for day time use, and nap time. I love that Moraki diapers don’t need prepping, but can be used immediately. They become more absorbent with washing, but I can barely make it through one prep before putting a new, fun pattern like the holiday elephants! I definitely had trouble choosing between this print and the robots, but would have snatched up the fluffies ruffle bum if I had a baby girl. In fact, since Moraki diapers are made domestically, you can even contact them to create a custom diaper.
During our initial use with this one-size diaper, I didn’t choose the correct settings and we had some wetness out the top. It can be a natural reaction to panic if you get leaking with a diaper, but all diapers fit differently and sometimes it just takes another try. I adjusted the settings and followed Moraki’s Tips for fit and wing droops snaps and we didn’t experience any more pocket day time leaks.
I also had an excellent experience working with Charlie, the inventor and owner of Moraki Diapers. She was very responsive to my questions, even offering her phone number to troubleshoot and checking in to see if my user-error challenges were resolved. It’s clear that Charlie cares about creating an excellent diaper that benefits US workers and is committed to sustainable choices, including using minimal packaging and recycled options for tags and shipping.
While testing the Moraki as a pocket for nap time use, I put him down with one insert initially. Kai always tests the limits of any diaper while sleeping, especially since he naps beyond the recommended 2 hour diaper change period some days. I soon discovered that longer naps required an additional small insert for longer naps and Kai slept comfortably without leaks or prolonged exposure to wetness. I also found that I preferred using the diaper as an AI2, simply because I liked the fit and ability to reuse the cover, rather than washing after each use.
I appreciate that the Moraki has an insert that agitates out in the wash, taking the step of removing a wet insert out of the changing process. Unfortunately, it also means you have to reach in and take out the insert from the middle of a soiled diaper, right at the prime poop spot, or having to wring out an extra soppy diaper because the insert is still inside. I actually use diaper liners, but toddler poops often still require rinsing the diaper itself, so I prefer pocket openings at the top of the diaper.
That being said, the Moraki diaper really shines as an AI2. These diapers are made in California by local moms and the cost reflects supporting domestic manufacturing. You can deflect the cost a bit and prolong the life of your diapers by using them as AI2s. For example, Moraki recommends 24 diapers and inserts if you use their pocket system for a newborn, but only 18 are needed if you select to use them as AI2s. An AI2 allows you to purchase less covers and simply change them out as the insert becomes wet. You can also save by buying a diaper package. Whatever you choose, Moraki diapers are backed with an 18 month warranty on elastic and snaps, as well as a 30 day Wash and Wear Guarantee.
The Moraki inserts offer a unique, circular design that allows them to be extra absorbent, without long drying times. They are made with hemp and cotton, giving them great absorbency. Inserts come in multiple sizes, bu are Fold-To-Fit, so you can purchase all Onesize/Overnight inserts and be set from birth to potty training. I especially love how you can use these diapers in an AI2 without any confusion about which side goes up against baby’s skin. Moraki diapers include a tummy panel at the top to prevent wicking and I appreciate how this helps keep my baby’s sensitive skin dry in conjunction with the inserts.
To give an idea for fit, my son is in the 23 to 25 lb range and he is still on the third setting, with lots of room to grow. I have to snap diapers pretty far in on his waist, so I appreciate the addition of wing droop snaps to help provide a great fit. Moraki diapers definitely have fluff to them and seem a bit more bulky at the top, but my little guy moves and sleeps comfortably in his.
