Thank you Birth, Baby, and Beyond for putting on a fantastic GCDC in Cedar Rapids today! I enjoyed browsing my local(!) store, meeting other cloth diapering moms, and enjoying a morning out with baby. This was my third GCDC and I’ve now attended a in 3 states – Illinois, Missouri, and Iowa!
The Great Cloth Diaper Change is a unique event intended to raise awareness about cloth diapers by inviting communities across the world to help break a Guinness World Record. It began 3 years ago and has only grown each year to include more participants.
In 2011, 5026 simultaneous diaper changes set the world record.
In 2012, 8251 simultaneous diaper changes broke the record. Last year, 189 locations participated on 4 continents. Since it was simultaneous, this meant that some dedicated families where changing babies at crazy hours!
This year, 285 hosts registered in 17 countries to participate in a rolling event, where everyone changes their baby at 11 am local time on April 20th. I’m sure families that changed babies in Malaysia at 2 am in the past are grateful for this change!
In addition to spreading awareness, connecting communities, and breaking world records, many GCDC events also collect registration fees and hold auctions to benefit The Real Diaper Association. This important non-profit organization gathers facts, shares information, and supports communities through local cloth diaper circles. Thansk to Birth, Baby, and Beyond for helping us contribute to their efforts this year!
While there are many great reasons to participate in a GCDC event, more than anything it’s a morning of fun! I think Cedar Rapids held the best event so far. I appreciated the terrific organization, ample space to move and play, and the friendly moms who attended. The owner, Tammy, generously offered her retail space, time, and numerous raffle items to create an intimate, relaxing, fun time for moms and babies alike. I know all who attended appreciated the efforts of Tammy, her staff, and volunteers. There won’t be a baby to change from our house next year, but I definitely plan to participate as a volunteer!
