I don’t so much qualify as a “new mom” the 4th time around, so much as a “new mom again.” Baby #4 certainly brings different challenges than
his predecessors, but some things remain the same. For example, you still fantasize about the little “luxuries” that you take for granted during other times, such as:
- Going to the bathroom alone.
- Eating breakfast before noon.
- Shopping without children.
- 10 minutes in the shower.
- Watching your favorite tv show during normal waking hours.
- Combed hair.
- Wearing non lounge or athletic clothing.
- Dinner from scratch.
- Eating at the table independently.
- Reading a book without falling asleep.
- Hanging out with your spouse at night.
- Typing with two free arms.
- Sex.
- Bra straps that are regularly snapped closed.
- Wearing shoes with a heel without killing your back.
- Car rides where the only soundtrack is the radio.
- Looking for 1 set of lost keys, rather than 5 lost pacifiers.
- Sneezing without peeing a little.
- Accomplishing anything quickly.
But you know what I miss most of all with this baby?
- Sleeping independently, my legs and arms stretched willy-nilly, my body totally relaxed, sweet sleep completely taking over my body.
This new little guy at 4 weeks still rejects bassinets, swings, and car seats. Nurse him to sleep in your arms, soothe him in a carrier, work your sleepy time magic, but whatever you do Do not put him down. While there is a certain sweetness to all of this, sometimes I just long for the luxury of just one blissful hour of independent sleep. I look forward to the evenings when I can nurse baby to sleep and hand him over to my husband while he studies, the two of them cozy downstairs, while I hog the king sized bed upstairs, lost in dreamland until it’s time to nurse again.
What’s your new baby luxury?
