If your family has a baby in diapers, chances are you’ve dealt with poop a time or two. Make those cloth diapers and you’ve rinsed that poo off before washing. When I started using cloth diapers nearly 6 years ago, our go-to option was the classic dunk, swish, and squeeze method. This turned some people away from cloth diapering, but we started cloth with one in diapers full-time and another potty training. At that point, poop didn’t phase us much.
A few years in, diaper sprayers gained momentum and I eagerly purchased one. It proved a good investment and an upgrade from dunk and swish. Unfortunately, it could also mean spraying water and poo beyond the toilet bowl. We weren’t the only ones with a love/hate relationship with the sprayer. The Spray Pal family couldn’t perfect the spray either, so they invented a splatter shield.
We started using the Spray Pal with our sprayer about a month ago. I followed the easy picture tutorial and clipped in my first diaper. The process is fairly simple:
- Clip in diaper, inside facing out.
- Snap closed to create a barrier around diaper.
- Hover over the toilet bowl
- Spray clean.
- Unsnap, close around diaper, and squeeze out excess water.
- Hold over a wet bag, unclip, and let diaper drop in.
I really appreciate that this is not a product with a steep learning curve. Very little “assembly” is required and using it is very straightforward.
When you turn the sprayer downward on its highest setting, it quickly removes poo. I especially appreciate how the “wall” of the Spray Pal behind the diaper provides something sturdy for the water to come up against, making the process quick and efficient.
The Spray Pal truly does eliminate splatter and keeps the poo in the toilet bowl where it belongs. It also folds up nicely, so you can easily keep it near the toilet without using much space or inside a chic Maxwell Design’s Spray Pal Size Wet Bag.
When it comes to the Spray Pal, the big question everyone seems to ask is, Do I need it? To this I say, it’s totally subjective. The Spray Pal can help you cut down on messes, reduce water waste, and clean your diapers more efficiently. It is technically a convenience item, but a splatter shield is a smart buy if you are going to invest in a diaper sprayer. Dunk and swish if you prefer, but I wouldn’t spray without a shield.

I am new to cloth diapers, and will be cloth diapering my baby soon as soon as he arrives (any day now), and at first these accessories seemed like just that, accessories. I didn’t think about them as something you needed to CD successfully. Now the more I read about them, I feel that you can CD successfully without them however, it’s sure nice to have and takes a lot of work and eeeek out of the laundry part! Thanks for sharing your review!
