On Veteran’s Day, it’s popular to say we support or honor our Veterans. Both of my grandfathers, my father, and my cousin served in the military. My family experienced first-hand the price veterans can pay for their service to our country. I believe there is honor and dignity in paying tribute with our words, but how can we demonstrate our appreciation through action?
I found 5 Ways to Honor Veterans Through Meaningful Service:![]()
- Volunteer Professional Services. MilServe.org provides a way for professionals to search for volunteer opportunities to support veterans with case management, legal expertise,
financial counseling, home improvement, mentoring, and more.
- Join the Veteran’s History Project. Help veterans tell their story by volunteering with the Veteran’s History Project through the Library of Congress. The project includes opportunities for 10th graders and older. I have had the privilege of writing veteran’s stories for a local newspaper and would highly recommend it.
Volunteer with the DAV Transportation Network. As a DAV Volunteer, you can support veterans who live remotely from VA Hospitals receive life saving treatments. Volunteers locate a nearby hospital and volunteer to drive a DAV van.
Volunteer with Canine Companions for Independence. This wonderful non-profit organization provides highly trained assistance dogs to individuals with disabilities, in addition to ongoing support. Canine Companions for Independence depends on volunteers to assist with puppy raising, breeding, fundraising, and more.- Visit Veterans at Your Local VA Hospital. Contact your hospital to learn more about visitor hours and what type of care might be needed or appreciated. This might mean a personal visit, writing letters, or putting together care packages.
I love these ideas! Veteran’s Day can sometimes get lost or overlooked and I would like to make sure that doesn’t happen in my family. Thank you for putting this together!
Thank you for putting this together! My husband is a combat wounded army veteran and I try to make Veterans Day special for him. So many civilians do not know how to show their appreciation so they just don’t do anything. Veterans Day is about so much more than a barbecue!
I love these ideas! So amazing!
