Parents use wipes all day long – diaper changes, hand wiping, spills in the car, cleaning up mud at the park, and more. Disposable wipes are certainly convenient, but they are not the most affordable or eco-friendly option. Thankfully, cloth wipes are a practical, easy-to-use alternative. Plus, you can easily make pop up cloth wipes to rival disposable options!
What are Cloth Wipes?
- Pre cut and sewn cloth wipes offered through your favorite eco-friendly retailer. These range from cotton, to flannel, to bamboo, to hemp.
- Re-purposed baby wash cloths.
- Squares of cotton or flannel fabric that you cut to size and possibly serge around the edges. Check out this How to Make Your Own Wipes tutorial from All About Cloth Diapers.
- Re-purposed flannel baby blankets or other items that can be cut into squares.
Why Cloth Wipes?
- Save Money on baby wipes and “wet ones” from the baby years and beyond.
- Help the environment by creating less waste.
- You control what ingredients go into your wipes and onto your child’s skin.
- If you’re already reusing cloth diapers, it just makes sense to save money and the environment with cloth wipes as well.
How to Make Pop Up Cloth Wipes
Did you know you can make your cloth wipes pop up for easy storage and use? Simply re-use an old disposable wipes container or plastic travel wipes container. Here’s how:
Supplies
10 to 20 cloth wipes of your choice, relatively close in size (different brands and fabrics are fine)
Disposable pop-up wipes container or wipes warmer
Instructions
Step 1: Lay your first wipe on a flat surface.

Step 2: Layer a 2nd wipe over the 1st, beginning halfway down. This will leave part of the 2nd wipe hanging over.

Step 3: Fold your 1st wipe down over the 2nd wipe to the fold.

Step 4: Lay a new wipe so that the bottom half lays on top of the folded area. Quick tip: You are always replacing the wipe you have recently folded. This will help you know if you need to lay on the top or bottom.

Step 5: Fold the wipe at the bottom UP over the fold.
Step 6: Lay the next wipe so that the top half is on top of the fold and the bottom hangs down. Quick tip: You are always replacing the wipe you have recently folded. This will help you know if you need to lay on the top or bottom.
Step 7: Fold the top wipe DOWN so that it is over the fold.

Repeat the lay and fold method until you have enough wipes to fill your container. If you get lost, remember that you are always replacing the folded down wipe with a new wipe and then alternating folding up and down.
