This post is part of the Cloth Diapering Bloggers and Dirty Diaper Laundry hosted Cloth Diaper Carnival that is held every month. Many bloggers get together and write about the same topic. This month is “Where did you first hear about/ see cloth diapers?”
One lovely Saturday afternoon, I attended a birthday brunch for a mom from the local lap sit group. She invited 4 other moms to come baby-free and enjoy a quiet afternoon of food and conversation. I could tell she felt a bit nervous as she brought out the food and explained that, due to a strong family history of food allergies, all of the food was wheat, dairy, and sugar free. A conversation ensued about her delicious homemade food and I had the opportunity to get to know her a bit better.
She explained that she’d spent some time living in rural Germany during college and greatly admired the simplicity of life there. As a result, she wanted to incorporate some of that simplicity into her own life, which meant making much of her own food, natureopathic medicine, line drying clothes, and using cloth diapers. I was intrigued by the idea of simple living and determined to learn more.
During a play date at her home one afternoon, I had the opportunity to ask her about her more about cloth diapering. She was relatively new to it herself and basically purchased her diapers with the help of a store owner in Minnesota. My friend used the most basic system of prefolds and covers and disposables while out of the house. I went home and broached the topic with my husband. He was surprisingly nonchalant about it and I starting searching the internet for more info. I wasn’t converted at first.
Weeks later, I still found myself considering them, however, and Tim once again encouraged me to look into them. Once I started researching the topic, the world of cloth diapering fascinated and overwhelmed me. I looked for local cloth diaper stores, but they were all more than an hour’s drive away. I spent hours researching the different styles and brands. I couldn’t believe all of the options! Then I discovered the Diaper Daisy Cloth diaper trial at www.diaperdaisy.com and decided I needed to jump in and try some cloth diapers.
Once I received the diapers, handled them, and used them, I loved them! I can’t quite explain this odd connection to cloth diapering to my friends and family who don’t use cloth. It seems a bit over the top: “There’s a cloth diapering community?” But I love to meet a mom who cloth diapers, to answer questions when I bring out an adorable rich brown or vibrant green diaper, and to help change misconceptions about cloth diapering. Someone told my mom recently that reading my blog posts about cloth diapering renewed her enthusiasm and she went out and purchased some new fluff – I considered that the best of compliments!

Stopping by for the Carnival! LOL on the nonchalant hubby. Mine was the same way until he saw how much money we were saving!
That is cool that you did a trial! I thought about it but I was obsessed with building a stash before baby was even born.
And Sara from Diaper Daisy is great! She was my roomie in Las Vegas!
Thanks for joining the carnival!
Isn’t it funny that people think cloth is so difficult, but we equate it with a simpler life? I love that your friend experienced the simplicity of life in Germany. I love the way they live over there…loving life and enjoying every minute! My mom was born in Germany and we visit family over there every few years, it truly is a beautiful simple place to be 🙂
