So many family vacation destinations are hands-off – look, but don’t touch. Madame Tussauds proved to be a delightful, family-friendly exception. I wondered if our kids, ages 9, 7, 4, and 1, would be interested in a museum of famous wax figures. They loved touring the wax museum and quickly crowned Madame Tussauds a favorite family vacation destination!
Madame Tussauds New York generously gave our family VIP passes to the museum, giving us not only access to our favorite celebrities, but to the Marvel 4D Experience as well. The friendly staff provided elevator access for our stroller (spoiler alert: New Yorkers are surprisingly friendly) and directed us from one area to another. While the January cold might not seem ideal for New York, the season allowed us to enjoy the wax museum at our own pace and take pictures without waiting in lines.
We were uncertain about touching the wax figures at first, but soon realized that Madame Tussauds is truly a hands-on experience. The kids loved posing with famous figures they recognized, pretending to be scared of dinosaurs, and hanging out with Sponge Bob. The only downside to all of this posing is the lack of lighting, which makes for less-than-stellar cell phone photos and selfies.
You can even make Madame Tussauds an educational experience, learning about the meticulous art of sculpting and working with wax to create life-size, three dimensional figures of the most popular celebrities from the worlds of film, television, music, politics, history, sports and the arts from yesterday and today. The figures are truly works of art and will surprise you with their life-like eyes and features. I even told my daughter to move out of the way of a woman taking photographs, only to discover she was made of wax!
I got a kick out of posing next to Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz because I played her in an elementary school play. The ET bicycle also proved a big hit with the entire family, even though our kids still haven’t seen the film (hangs head in shame). My absolute favorite photos are definitely with the POTUS, though.
I even convinced my husband to pose for a few funny photos along the way!
Plus, my 7 year-old couldn’t wait to see Taylor Swift (although he did ask me not to share photos of him pretending to kiss her).
We enjoyed the the Marvel 4D Experience, especially posing with the enormous wax Hulk. The figurines will delight any ComiCon fan and the 4D music made us jump and laugh. My older kids had mixed feelings about getting sprayed with water and feeling odd things at their feet, but my 4 year-old loved it!
