When I think of the ideal gift these days, my mind often turns to experiences. Jewelry, books, and movies are great, but my perfect Mother’s Day would take them one step further.
I’m always dreaming of a massage or facial, but it’s hard to justify treating myself and when would I find the time? A thoughtful gift takes this into account and simply makes it happen.
Some moms long for family time and any of these idea can be adapted to include the family.
New Jewelry + Date Night: New earrings would be accompanied by a date night invite with a place to wear them, Friday selected, babysitter arranged.
A Book + An Afternoon to Herself: An engaging read would have a coffee shop gift card slipped inside with an invitation to take next Saturday afternoon to enjoy her favorite beverage, relax, and read.
Movie + Date Night: I love picking up a Redbox or, even better, actually going to the cinema. Buy me some movie theater goodies, attach a gift card, and let me know that I pick the movie, you take care of the rest.
Adventure Day + Calendar Cleared: Perhaps you and your wife love to go rock climbing, hiking, or swimming in the ocean, but haven’t found time in awhile. Plan an adventure for just the two of you or for the whole family. You might attach this “gift card” to a new water bottle or backpack.
Cosmetics Gift Card + Consultation: If you live near a Sephora store or a local department store with a cosmetics department, you can often arrange a make-up consultation and refresh your look. Give her a gift card to purchase some new make-up, along with an appointment card letting her know that you’ve arranged for her to enjoy it.
Salon Treatment + Appointment: Many salons offer gift packages for massages, manicures/pedicures, and facials. Find a package she’ll love, make an appointment, and write her a note letting her know it’s all set. You planned a fun day with the kids and she can simply relax.
Fitness Class or Team Sport + Scheduling: Perhaps your significant other love yoga, but is longing to sign up for hot yoga on a Thursday night? Maybe she is interested in joining a volleyball team, but concerned about the time? Perhaps she has a goal to increase her overall health? Why not sign give her a new pair of athletic shoes or yoga pants and sign her up for a class or team that interests her, with the scheduling all arranged?
Restaurant Double Date + Babysitter: Does she love discovering new restaurants or going out with friends? Why not arrange a double date or a romantic evening at her favorite restaurant? Pick the date, make a reservation, and call a babysitter in advance.
Store Gift Card + Shopping Day: Receiving a gift card to shop is always fun, but these cards often sit in wallets begging to be used between commitments. Purchase a gift card to her favorite store or the mall and put it inside a card letting her know you checked for sales and next Saturday is the perfect day for a shopping expedition. You could go one step farther and arrange for a shopping date with her best friend.
Individual Date Nights + Babysitter: This gift has quite a few possibilities. It might mean scheduling a date night once a month for the next six months or every Friday for the next month. It could also mean setting up mom/child dates for upcoming weekends, freeing time for mom to go out individually with each child and enjoy some precious one-on-one time.
Old Fashioned Coupon Books: Each one of these ideas can be adapted for any budget. Ditch the gift card or accompanying item and simply consider ways you can give her time to relax, care for herself, and enjoy the things she loves. Coupon books make an awesome family activity and each person can think of ways to help mom and show her that they care.
